moki’s imagery stands out due to her photorealistic style, while at the same time emanating something deeply surrealistic. Mythical creatures, which seem to be stuck in a bizarre metamorphosis appear in her spellbound landscapes and then almost disappear completely in the solitude of the scenery. Only noticeable as silhouettes, these creatures are almost indistinguishable from the gnarled brushes or the water that appear to have absorbed them. Does this evoke a feeling of being overwhelmed, of nothingness in the face of the vast surroundings?

Or does it relate to the romantic but unfulfilled desire of becoming one with nature? The diversity in mokis art is not only reflected in this play with different perspectives but also in the ampleness of the different media, materials and techniques she employs. moki (born 1982) does not only work as a painter, she is also a prolific comic artist and has expanded her work to video animation, sculptures and installations.

Her imagery is highly unique, each and every object or painting merges into a cohesive body of work, always held together by her very personal and imaginative perspective. moki masters the balance between the different forms of expression and media with instinctive confidence. She draws inspiration from a diverse range of sources: found or self-shot photographs, drawings, films, books by the likes of Haruki Murakami or Boris Strugatzki. Moki collects impressions, things that move and touch her. However, the work process unfolds intuitively, as if the motif or the story would seek and find her.
